I had no idea that there were people out there searching the blog world to find bloggers like myself who even mention the word "TNIV."
I'd rather not enter a debate with anyone who supports the TNIV.
This blog exists primarily to share my life with friends and family whom I love.
I have researched both sides of the debate thoroughly and I wholeheartidly agree with Wayne Grudem and I disagree with TNIV supporters. Therefore, no further debate is necessary - we can agree to disagree. =)
So, look for more quotes, pictures of the kiddos, happenings in our life in Montana ...

Wow, I'm with you. It is a debate that could go on for some time and it appears the both gentlemen would continue to be strongly opposed to you. I appreciate the information that was provided by you and them, but I like hearing about you personally on this blog instead of a debate about Bible translations. Miss you.

I'm curious, you said you have thoroughly researched both sides of the TNIV issue. What have you read that points out the accuracy and orthodoxy of the TNIV? What biblical scholars have you read who believe that the TNIV is an accurate translation? Which reviews of the TNIV have you read?
I want to make it clear that I'm not opposed to you. I'm not even a fan of the TNIV. I just am a Bible scholar and translator myself. And I've deeply grieved by how much has been said about the TNIV which is not true. I don't use the TNIV myself. I prefer other Bible versions.
Please do not take my comments about the TNIV as anything against you. I really want to just be on God's side in the search for truth.

Lisa, Wayne knew about your post because I sent him the link. He has an entire website-- http://englishbibles.blogspot.com (Better Bibles Blog)--devoted to translations of the Bible and I knew he would be interested because we've discussed the nonsense of the 3000 supposed inaccuracies before.
The real question is how I found your blog. I found your blog running a google blog search on the term "TNIV." I do this regularly because Bible translations are a hobby of mine (I have over 80 distinct English translations in my collection), and I regularly look to see what other folks are saying.
Since your original post was in the context of "getting on your soapbox" I felt that phrase implied a public statement you were making, and I tried to very politely ask you what you were specifically opposed to in the TNIV and whether or not you had a copy yourself.
I'm willing to let the issue die because I believe it's evidently gone further than you intended or perhaps even might have patience for. But if not, I would also be interested in an answer to Wayne's question regarding which sources from an opposing viewpoint you've read if you have indeed looked at both sides of the issue.

R. Mansfield - this discussion has gone further than I intended. And although I said "may I get on my soapbox" - I did not intend to enter a debate. However, I do realize that I have yet to answer any of your questions.
I have been all over the TNIV web site. I've read most of the articles that are listed there. I have also read Strauss, Blomberg and Carson. I do not own a copy of the TNIV, but nor do I own any paraphrase or any other "gender-accurate" translation. However, I have access to one every Sunday at church!
The TNIV publishers claim that the purpose is to reach 18-34 year olds. I guess I'm not seeing it. I have been doing college-aged ministry for a number of years and I've found that if college students aren't reading the Bible, it's for a variety of reasons, none of which include "gender-accurate" language!!! It's also not b/c the translations available are too difficult to read. Somehow, I'm not convinced that more 18-34 year olds will read the Bible now since the TNIV was printed.
I also do not see any reason for the church to be "p.c." Do we really need to spend our time worrying what people think when they read "he or him" in the Bible??? And now that we've made changes to say "human kind" or "people" ... are they any less offended? Won't those people always find something to be offended by?
I think the line of reasoning for coming up with such a translation is flawed. Therefore, I think that the justifications made in order to change the words to be more "culturally sensitive" are unnecessary.
Lisa, I guess this is where you and I see things differently.
I don't see the changes in gender language in the TNIV to be changes for the sake of political correctness, but of translational accuracy based on contemporary language. In the old days "man" meant all people and "he" could stand for both "he or she," but our language is moving away from this.
And it's primarily just an issue in the English language. Many Latin languages such as French and Spanish have inclusive pronouns that have been used in their Bibles for years. Ours issues relate to a deficiency in the English language. However, our language is changing and will adapt.
I teach college-level English and I see these aspects at work each week.
If I thought the TNIV was just a politically correct translation, I wouldn't pay any attention to it. However, I see it as a grammatically correct translation.
And if it means anything, I'm not inside the 18-34 market :-)
