Goodbye blogspot, Hello WordPress!

With the start of a new year,
I decided I needed a new blog.
And I'd like to have a bit more privacy!

Here's the catch ...
if you want to continue reading my blog -
you will have to
1) go to www.wordpress.com
2) click on sign up
3) follow the directions.
(they will email you a password, which you can later change)

Then, you'll need to email me your "username"
(I don't need to know your password)

I apologize for the inconvenience ...
but I feel led to protect my family and our personal life.

Thanks for understanding!
And have a Happy New Year!

The Christmas story - told in Revelation 12

Revelation 12 has always been my favorite account of the Christmas story.
However, it is one version that is often overlooked and rarely taught in church.
As I was reading blogs a couple of days ago,
I read Jay Lorenzen's www.mycommonplace.com
He had a post on this very passage... THANKS, JAY!
I hope you like it as much as I did!

I ran across a fascinating post by Mike Metzger entitled “One More Nativity Piece.” Mike criticizes our modern retelling of Christmas–which makes the all-too-familiar tale all-too-forgettable after December 25th. He asks, “What’s missing?” Using the Christmas story from Revelation 12, he describes what is missing in these words:

The story in Revelation begins with a dragon fomenting a ferocious struggle in the ancient heavens. Long before the creation of planet earth a conflict raged across the cosmos between troops loyal to the Great King and those following Lucifer. This makes The Lord of the Rings look like child’s play. The vanquished (a roiling force totaling one-third of the angelic realm and including the deceiver known as Lucifer) were thrown down to earth.

The story then fast forwards to “O little town of Bethlehem” – except that everything’s not lying still. Above the deceptively sweet “deep and dreamless sleep” the silent stars do not go by. We find a woman, Mary, about to give birth. The fallen Lucifer, whom we often call the devil or Satan, is crouching greedily before her. His blood stained hands are ready to crush the infant Jesus the moment he is born.

Somehow… someway… at the moment of birth the infant is snatched away to safety… but not a moment too soon. A headlong flight into Egypt ensues with demonic rasp-like pursuers on the tail of Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus. Foiled, the devil declares total war on the universe. Our last glimpse of the devil – but not the last we’ll ever see of him – finds Satan scanning the horizon looking to devour followers of the Christ child. It’s a book worth reading… and yet to be finished.

Satan was once part a cast member in the Christmas story. Prior to the 19th century, the Christmas chronicle was similar to other ancient epics – lots of bad guys and often raucous or vulgar behavior. That’s because the gospel was understood as a four-chapter story characterized by four types of conversations: (1) how things ought to be, (2) what life is like in the real world, (3) what we can do to make things better, and (4) what life will be like some day. The second chapter – the way life is – reminds us that evil still slinks around and we should never completely cover our eyes. “The world is all the richer for having a devil in it,” wrote William James, “so long as we keep our foot upon his neck.” There are bad guys, and we need to remember they are not asleep at the wheel.

We, on the other hand, tend to be asleep at the wheel and celebrate a candy-land view of Christmas. We erased Satan from the story when 19th century Victorian England sanitized all fables that were within earshot of children. The Victorians, many of them people of faith, romanticized the idea of “childhood” as something quite separate and distinct from adult life, meaning they “cleaned up” the ancient stories for kids by removing or emasculating villains. During this same period, the Christmas story was scoured clean of bad guys. Bethlehem became an idyllic hamlet for hobbits. The winner-take-all blood-and-guts cosmic struggle was excised for a sweet, snow white tale about a baby, mother and husband, and a stable.

J.R.R. Tolkien warned this “sprucing up” would ruin the ancient stories. And, sure enough, that’s exactly what happened… There are no real antagonists, just abstractions about evil – like Buddhist stories. By erasing the devil, the Christmas story has . . . little to do with our Monday-Friday world.

The solution is adding one more piece to our nativity sets – the devil.

Goodbye, my dear, sweet family!

Saying goodbye is always hard!
Shiloh cried for 30 minutes this morning after they left. =(

We had a great week!
Good fellowship.
Good memories.

I love and miss you already, Himes clan!

Merry Christmas to All

"Shiloh, who's birthday is it?" I asked.
"Baby Jesus!" She replied.

MaMa, PaPa and Auntie Shawnie are here.
The kids are beyond excited.
I had no idea just how much I have missed them!

"Over the river and thorough the woods
to the Stucky's house we go...."
"I thought it was 'to grandmother's house we go'" my mom said.
I'm thankful they came here! =)

Boys

"Boys are found everywhere
on top of, underneath, inside of,
climbing on, swinging from,
running around or jumping to.
A boy is truth with dirt on its face,
beauty with a cut on its finger,
wisdom with bubble gum in its hair,
and the hope of the future with a
frog in its pocket."

-Alan Marshall Beck

I am a mother of only one boy -
I deeply respect you mothers of more ...
Julie and Jody come to mind! =)

Embarassed and Humiliated!

I took the kids to a play group yesterday
and they did GREAT.

Today was another story.

They kept jumping on the bed,
fighting over toys,
they wouldn't stay in their chairs to eat,
... so I took away their food ...
only to endure a 10 minute melt-down session.

Ah, toddlerhood ...
you never know what you're going to get one day from the next!

I'm reading Foster Cline's, Parenting with Love and Logic for the 3rd time.
It's such a great book ... but so hard to implement.
Baby steps .. baby steps ... baby steps.

YIPEE!

My family is on their way ..
SUN in Colorado and Wyoming
should make for a pretty drive.

I'm glad they are driving, not me! =)

Buried in Snow!

No, not us ...
although it is snowing today!
But Colorado!

Glad all you Coloradians will have a white Christmas ...

And meanwhile,
would you pray that my family can dig themselves out
from under TWO feet of snow
... so they can come and see us?
Thanks!

Sun, sun and more sun!

We have had FIVE straight days of sunshine!
YIPEE!
And there is more in the forcast.
It's begining to feel like Colorado around here,
although a mere 20-30 degrees colder!

My family is coming for Christmas ...
only 3 more days!!! I can hardly wait!
Now that's a great Christmas present!

Carriage Ride

The 1st time on a carriage ride for both Shiloh and Landon...

Followed by a cup of hot chocolate and a stroll in & out of the local shops.

Blue Skies and Sunshine!!!

In the Northwest,
blue skies and sunshine are a rarity in the winter months.
Kalispell, Montana is no different.

Yesterday, I "begged" God for a sunny day...
and today I awoke to a miracle.
It's truly magical ... not a cloud in the sky!!!
I will never again take a day like this for granted.
Enjoy every day like it - my Colorado friends!

We're taking the kids for a carriage ride in Big Fork this afternoon -
God couldn't have given us a better day to go!

My soul feels alive!

Anyone with experience in this area? =)

Ouch!

"Being ‘busy’ is the natural punishment that comes upon those who cannot discern the significant from the urgent.” Fritz Hinrichs

"Tis the Season

Christmas shopping - finished

Decorations - up, except for the outside lights which I will now skip

Packages - in the mail

Gingerbread house - built and being eaten

Cookie exchange - baked and exchanged =)

Christmas letters and photos - in the mail

Ah, the feeling of completion (at least for the moment)

Christmas music playing...
Fire burning...
Kids sleeping...
...time to curl up and read a good book.

Sunshine and Rain

Life is always filled with both!
Something good happens, something bad happens.
Life is never all sunshine.
And thankfully, it's never all rain.
Sometimes I don't mind the rain...
it brings a whole new perspective when the sun finally comes out!

It's been raining (literally & figuratively) for days.
But yesterday and today - the sun decided to peak out!
It's amazing just how good the sun feels!

Ah - Christmas time!

Steve helped decorate - sort of! =)
Gingerbread house - oh Shiloh had so much fun!

Our tree - with a paper chain made by the kids.

I've been attending a Bible study in Big Fork, you may know.
I found out this morning that the teacher is on CCC staff.
What a small world.

Small miracle

Shiloh is taking a nap!
She has decided that she is
"too big to take a nap."
But today - a miracle!

Busy Bee

It's been a bit busy around here these days.

Bradley training
I just finished the academic paperwork.
4 books
1,020 pages
43 typed pages (in bookreports)
2 hospital tours
4-page exam

Hopefully, I can start classes right after New Year's.
I still need to visit with 3 midwives
and advertise, advertise, advertise.

I've been working on all this in between
Christmas shopping
Hosting a baby shower
A weekly Bible study that Steve teaches

and Starbucks ...
Steve's full-time job!
He's been hired as a shift supervisor.
Doors open on Friday the 8th.
So, he has been going through training
and training other new employees.

And that leaves me a TRUE full-time, stay-at-home mom.
Let's just say this change has been a shock to the system. =)

How did my life get so busy in 3 1/2 short months of being in Montana?
